This March, we want to help you make the most of your lessons. Learning to sing is a journey, and like any journey, it’s important to track your progress to stay motivated and see how far you’ve come. We know measuring vocal progress can feel a bit abstract, so how do you know if you’re truly improving? Here are some effective ways to measure your growth in your vocal lessons!

Record Yourself!
We know sometimes this is a tough one! If you really dislike listening back to your own voice, please know that you are not alone! We are always our own worst critics. However, one of the most effective ways to gauge progress is to record yourself singing. Keep a log of recordings and listen back after a few weeks or months. You’ll be able to notice improvements in tone, control, and overall vocal confidence. Comparing old and new recordings can be a great motivator!
Track your Range!
An expanding vocal range is a clear sign of vocal improvement. Keep track of the highest and lowest notes you can comfortably sing and revisit them periodically to see if your range has grown. As you "get more tools in your tool belt" when it comes to vocal technique, you will certainly find an ease hitting higher and lower notes, little by little.
Make a Game Out of Staying In Tune!
If you used to struggle with staying in tune, but now find yourself hitting notes more consistently, that’s a major sign of progress! Using tools like a tuner app or working with a teacher to fine-tune your ear can help track improvements in pitch accuracy. There are even apps now that measure your ability to stay in tune while singing, so make it fun!

Reflect on the Mental Side of Singing!
Beyond technical skills, vocal progress is also about confidence. Are you feeling more comfortable singing in front of others, even if it's just your teacher? Are you enjoying performing more and able to stay more in the moment on stage, rather than nitpicking every sound that comes out of your mouth? If so, these are key signs that your lessons are paying off.
Time your Breathing!
Good breath support is essential for a strong and stable voice. Try singing long phrases or holding notes for extended periods. If you find yourself running out of breath less often or able to sustain notes longer, you’re making progress! For an added challenge, keep a log of how long you can sustain air flow, and watch the number go up the more you practice!

Progress in singing lessons isn’t always linear, and some improvements may take time. However, by keeping track of your development using these methods, you can stay motivated and continue to grow as a vocalist. Remember to be patient and celebrate each milestone—your voice is an instrument that thrives with consistent practice and care! Give yourself credit for how far you've come. ❤️
